Sounds from the Sky (2017)
Featuring soundscapes and melodies inspired by these eerie videos accompanied by specially made staged shaky, amateur handy-cam footage of similar events across the country, this piece asks “What would it be like if this happening was to take place over Scotland?”.
Written as part of Tryst's first project: The latest pioneering project from Calum MacCrimmon and John Mulhearn’s Big MusicSociety sees ten contemporary piper/composer/producers commissioned to write new music in the spirit of their instrument’s classical, often ceremonial or commemorative, Ceòl Mòr tradition.
Compositions from MacCrimmon, Mulhearn, Finlay MacDonald,Rory Campbell, Ross Ainslie, Ali Hutton, Steven Blake, Lorne MacDougall, James Duncan Mackenzie and Mairearad Green will variously enlist the whol eensemble on additional pipes, instruments and voices.

The Helm A slow reel type thing written to be a relaxed start to the set. Lots of improvising over the chromatic notes if you can get them! This was named after the house along Shore Road in Carradale where my family lived before I was born. It's had many occupants since then but it's current occupant is keeping up the houses worthiness of a tune titled after it. 22.9 KB
The Inebriated Aviators This tune was sitting untitled for a long time until one day, I was trying to get to Canada. Unfortunately the AirTransat flight from Glasgow to Toronto was delayed, and then cancelled. It wasn't until the next day when I woke up to 7 missed calls from newspapers I found out it was cancelled due to the pilots being under the influence of alcohol. The title seems to fit the wacky, up and down nature of the tune. Alternative title is "The Pished Pilots"! I actually submitted the second part slowed down as a pitch for a Channel 4 game show theme! 20.9 KB
